Description of Foxtail Palm Tree

The Foxtail Palm Tree is one of the most recognizable, sought after palms in Southwest Florida. Hailing from Australia, the Foxtail palm gets its name from its bushy fronds that resembles, well, a fox tail! Also known as the Wodyetia palm, the Wodyetia bifurcata is popular among landscapers and homeowners. This palm is perfect if you are looking to add some classic and elegant style to your landscaping projects. You will find the Foxtail in yards and medians all over the area, including Cape Coral, Pine Island, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, and Naples.

The Foxtail is a fast grower, reaching a height of 30 feet when mature. Due to their height, it is recommended that they are planted at least 8 feet from your home or structure. The Wodyetia bifurcata is a self-cleaning tree, something that not all palms can brag about. When the fronds die, they will fall off on their own, so it is considered to be a fairly low-maintenance palm tree.

Everybody loves the Foxtail Palm Tree

One of the great things about the Foxtail Palm Tree is that they come as a singular trunk or multiple trunks. The double trunked and the triple trunked Foxtails are great for lining walkways, circular driveways, or as accents in your yard. If you want to plant Foxtails in a row, you should plant them 6 feet apart from each other.

To keep the Foxtail palm’s fronds as green as possible, we recommend that you feed your palm a granular palm fertilizer three times a year, in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. The Foxtails are pretty drought tolerant, but make sure they gets plenty of water until it is established. They also thrive in full sun and do well in partial sun.
